Parents’
opinion about the bilingual teaching of children
Abstract
This paper
presents a survey result of parental opinion regarding English
teaching and learning for young children. First, the majority
of parents surveyed do not believe that English learning would
interfere with the development of children’s native language.
Secondly, a large proportion of parents still hold such opinion
that foreign language learning is the business of the teacher
and the child and there is little need for their active involvement.
Finally, many parents consider English learning as a necessary
task and they give little consideration to the needs and interests
of young children. The result clearly indicates the challenges
faced by bilingual education – not only help young children
learn the second language, but also work with parents to change
their traditional view of the purpose and methods of foreign
language learning and teaching.
